Ms. Vinitha John, a Ph.D. Research Scholar, along with Dr. Ridhima Tewari, presented their co-authored research paper titled "Demystifying the 'Thriving' Traditional Fishing Culture: A Study of Fishing Songs From Vypeen Fishing Community" at the 10th Annual Conference of Oral History Association of India (OHAI). The conference, themed Coastal Histories: Stories of Resistance and Resilience, was organized in collaboration with the Kerala Museum and held from January 24 to 26, 2025, at the Kerala Museum in Kochi, Kerala. Drawing on interviews with fisherfolk, policymakers, and other stakeholders, the paper employs Vypeen Island as a lens to critique the idealized depiction of Kerala's coastal fishing culture in digital archives, revealing how urbanization, technological advancements, and shifting generational aspirations have eroded traditional practices, underscoring the disjunction between archival representations and contemporary realities.
